New England Patriots at New York Jets Betting Preview

Patriots at Jets Betting Previews

After Week 1 losses for both teams, the Patriots and the Jets will look to get their records back to even. The great thing about this matchup, both teams start rookie quarterbacks, so after this game is over, one of them will receive their first NFL win.

Patriots Have to Take Care of the Ball

Losing a game 16-17 is a tough one to swallow. The defense for the Patriots played a very good game, while the offense struggled to get to the endzone. In a game where points and possessions matter, the Patriots turned the ball over twice. The final fumble is the one that will hurt them the most.

The fumble came in the red zone, with 3:30 left in the game, in a position where they were just chewing up the clock. While dwelling on the negatives is easy, some positives came out of this game. Mac Jones looked solid for a rookie. Completing 29 of 39 pass attempts for 281 yards and a touchdown while not throwing an interception.

The defense for the Patriots was solid all game, surrendering points on just three total drives. The defense only gave up 279 yards total, 185 passing, and 74 rushing. If the defense can continue to play at this level, the Patriots have a chance to win quite a few games this season.

Jets Need to Settle In Early

Nerves had to have been high for rookie quarterback Zach Wilson. Knowing the team traded away their quarterback for you to become the starter is a lot of pressure for anyone to have to deal with. Especially one that is expected to turn a franchise around that has only had two winning seasons in the last decade.

Wilson was able to play a much better second half on Sunday, completing 14 of 21 pass attempts for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Corey Davis was his go-to guy, puling in five receptions for 97 yards and two touchdowns. If the Jets’ offense is going to be successful going forward, they will need help from their running backs, who were only able to accumulate 45 rushing yards.

Defensively, the Jets’ main focus is going to be slowing down the running game. They gave up 111 yards on the ground Sunday. The Jets were only able to get to the quarterback one time. If they can play as they did in the second half, giving up just three points, the defense should be able to help the Jets stay in games.

The Picks

The New England Patriots are -6, and the points total is set at 42.

This will be New England’s first road game of the season. In 2020, the Patriots were 2-6 against the spread on road games.

Expect a great crowd for this one, as this will be the Jets season opener and the first time for their fans to see their new rookie quarterback. The Jets were 4-4 last season against the spread during home games.

The pressure will be at an all-time high for Wilson during this game. If he is unable to get going early, they will struggle to make a comeback against Belichick and the Patriots.

Take the Patriots -6 (-105) and under 42 points (-110).
