Nick Kurtz

Kurtz jammed his right hand while attempting to field a throw in the first inning of Wednesday's contest, which, alongside an illness, contributed to his removal from the game. Now on the IL, he'll be forced to sit out Tuesday's All-Star Game, as well as the Athletics' first series of the second half against the Nationals. Joey Meneses figures to take over as the team's primary first baseman while Kurtz is out, and Brian Serven will come up from Triple-A to fill the open roster spot.

Zack Gelof

3B

Gelof made a sliding catch for the first out in the bottom of the third inning, but he rammed his right leg into the left field wall in the process, and he was forced to exit the game as a result. The 26-year-old will finish his night having gone 0-for-1 in his only at-bat, and Lawrence Butler has replaced him the outfield against Detroit. More information on Gelof's status will likely be provided in the near future.

Brent Rooker

DH

Rooker was re-evaluated Tuesday after making slow progress in his recovery from a bone bruise in his left knee, which has been bothering him since early June. Test results revealed torn cartilage in the 31-year-old's knee, so he'll go under the knife to address the issue, putting an early end to his 2026 campaign. Jonah Heim has been getting regular starts at DH with Rooker on the IL and is now likely to remain in that role for the rest of the year.

Denzel Clarke

CF

Clarke originally landed on the injured list in April due to a bone bruise in his foot, but he strained his left hamstring while playing in a rehab game in late May. He's still expected to remain sidelined through the All-Star break, though his return to activity is an encouraging sign of progress in his recovery. That said, Henry Bolte has filled in admirably as Clarke's replacement in center field, so the latter may not have much of an impact on the big club once he's activated.

Luis Severino

SP

The right-hander landed on the injured list in late May due to a shoulder strain and was scheduled to be evaluated in 4-to-6 weeks, so he already seemed likely to spend more than 60 days on the shelf. Now three weeks into his recovery, Severino could be re-evaluated within the next week or two, at which point a target date for his return could begin to come into focus.
