Tyler Soderstrom
LF
Soderstrom is scheduled to undergo hip surgery Friday that will cause him to miss the rest of the season, so the A's will move him to the 60-day IL to free up a 40-man roster spot for Johnathan Rodriguez, who was claimed off waivers from Pittsburgh.
Jacob Wilson
SS
Wilson is missing a fourth consecutive start for the Athletics on Thursday as he dealt with nagging soreness in his left shoulder. The shortstop suffered a dislocated left shoulder earlier this season, and he is headed back to Sacramento to be examined by a doctor before the next steps are determined. Even if Wilson doesn't ultimately require surery, it sounds like he will be shut down for the rest of the campaign. Wilson was limited to only 80 games this season, slashing a disappointing .266/.298.388with seven home runs. With Wilson sidelined, the Athletics could use a combination of Darrel Hernaiz and Alika Williams at shortstop for the time being. Joshua Kuroda-Grauer (testicle) will also be an option at the position when he returns.
Denzel Clarke
CF
Clarke began his rehab assignment for a left hamstring strain, going hitless at the plate while logging five innings defensively in center field. The Athletics plan to build up the 26-year-old on a spring training-like progression, per MLB.com, so he's likely to see extended reps in Triple-A before being activated from the 60-day injured list. Clarke has appeared in 22 big-league games this season, slashing .170/.228/.189 with no homers, six RBI, four runs and two stolen bases.
Joshua Kuroda-Grauer
3B
Kuroda-Grauer will be eased back into baseball-related workouts after he required surgery July 21 to address a ruptured testicle, an injury he suffered a day earlier when he fouled a ball off of himself. The Athletics aren't putting a timeline on Kuroda-Grauer's return from the injured list, but since he hasn't yet begun a hitting, running or fielding progression, he doesn't appear on track to make it back from the shelf before the end of August.
Justin Sterner
RP
After undergoing right knee surgery Friday, Sterner had already been ruled out for the rest of the season. His move to the 60-day injured list is merely procedural, as it opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for waiver pickup Joe Rock. The 29-year-old Sterner logged a 6.12 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 40:13 K:BB over 42.2 innings out of the bullpen before hitting the shelf July 18.
Luis Severino
SP
Severino, who has been on the injured list since May 30, is not expected to toe the slab again in 2026. Manager Mark Kotsay believes there is not enough time left in the season based on his progression during his current throwing program. The right-hander's final stats for the season include a 2-6 record, 4.16 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 65:31 K:BB across 62.2 innings. Severino will enter the final year of his three-year, $67 million contract with the A's when he returns in 2027.
Jose Suarez
RP
Suarez has posted a 3.67 ERA and 1.30 WHIP across 27 innings since joining the Athletics in mid-May, and he's now in line for his first opening assignment with the team. The 28-year-old lefty has maxed out at 3.2 frames in an appearance this season, but he may be limited to an inning or two before turning the ball over to Jack Perkins, who had been lined up to start Thursday but is now likely to pitch in bulk relief.
Nick Kurtz
1B
Kurtz received the injection when he initially landed on the injured list last week with a strained right thumb. He's scheduled to shed his brace at the beginning of September, but with the 47-72 A's well out of the race for a postseason berth, the team likely won't be in much of a hurry to bring him back. If the Athletics opt to shut Kurtz down for the year, Jeff McNeil and Tommy White figure to split reps at first base for the rest of the season.
Mark Leiter Jr.
RP
Leiter landed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday due to the injury, which he'll opt to treat with a procedure rather than rest and rehab. The 35-year-old righty will close out the season with a 4.28 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, five holds and four saves across 33.2 innings.
Shea Langeliers
C
Gallegos previously reported Monday that Langeliers was expected to undergo a meniscus repair, but the catcher instead required a trim of the meniscus. A meniscectomy typically carries a recovery timeline of 3-to-6 weeks, so the Athletics haven't officially ruled Langeliers out for the season. That said, with the Athletics sitting at 44-62 and well out of the mix for a playoff spot, Langeliers is unlikely to be rushed along in his rehab and may be brought back only for a handful of games at the tail end of the season, if at all. Jonah Heim is poised to take over as the Athletics' primary backstop in Langeliers' absence.
Brent Rooker
DH
Rooker was re-evaluated Tuesday after making slow progress in his recovery from a bone bruise in his left knee, which has been bothering him since early June. Test results revealed torn cartilage in the 31-year-old's knee, so he'll go under the knife to address the issue, putting an early end to his 2026 campaign. Jonah Heim has been getting regular starts at DH with Rooker on the IL and is now likely to remain in that role for the rest of the year.
Brooks Kriske
RP
Kriske landed on the injured list May 13 due to a right shoulder impingement and had previously been shut down from throwing. Beginning a throwing progression is a step in the right direction, though it's just the first of many as the right-hander works his way back to full health. Having been transferred to the 60-day injured list June 2, Kriske isn't eligible to be activated until after the All-Star break.
Gunnar Hoglund
SP
It's the same procedure that Hoglund underwent in June of 2025, which also caused him to miss the rest of the season. He opened the 2026 season on the IL due to a sprained right knee and a lumbar spine strain and was given a cortisone shot for his left hip in early May. However, his hip injury was severe enough to necessitate another procedure, but the added time on the shelf should allow his knee and back to also recover. Hoglund will be sidelined for the rest of the 2026 campaign and will aim to be fully healthy for spring training.
