Burch Smith
RP
The transaction opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for outfielder Ben Malgeri, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Toledo. Smith is in the midst of a throwing progression as he works his way back from right shoulder inflammation, but his move to the 60-day IL indicates that the Tigers weren't counting on him being ready to contribute out of the bullpen before the All-Star break. He'll be eligible for activation beginning July 21.
Wenceel Perez
RF
The outfielder was injured in the weight room earlier this week when a plyometric band struck him in the face, causing the fracture. It's unclear how long Perez is expected to be sidelined. Trei Cruz was called up in a corresponding move Friday.
Gleyber Torres
2B
The veteran second baseman was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday due to an oblique strain, and he won't waste much time before getting treatment. Torres was sidelined more than a month with the same injury earlier this season, though it's unclear how long he's expected to be out this time around.
Justin Verlander
SP
Verlander had been slated to return from a nearly three-month absence with left hip inflammation, but he encountered a setback with his hamstring following a bullpen session Wednesday. The Tigers expect the 43-year-old's recovery to last "a matter of weeks." Keider Montero will start for the Tigers on Sunday and is likely to make additional starts while Verlander recovers.
Jack Flaherty
SP
Flaherty was making the first start of his minor-league rehab assignment, and he was able to throw 83 total pitches, 58 of which were strikes. The right-hander is working his way back from a left ankle injury, and it's possible that he'll be able to return to the major-league roster when first eligible June 28.
