Gleyber Torres
2B
Torres appears to be done with his rehab assignment after playing back-to-back games with Triple-A Toledo on Saturday and Sunday. He will receive some rest Monday before returning to the Tigers' active roster Tuesday, barring unforeseen circumstances. Torres has been shelved since early May while battling a left oblique strain.
Tarik Skubal
SP
Unofficially, Skubal allowed two hits and struck out six batters while inducing 10 swings and misses on 64 pitches (45 strikes). The workload marked a substantial increase from Skubal's previous sim game last Tuesday, when he tossed 39 pitches over 2.2 innings. According to Evan Woodbery of MLive.com, manager A.J. Hinch indicated last week that the Tigers are planning to have Skubal complete a third sim game this coming weekend. Assuming his elbow checks out fine following that outing, Skubal may need to make just one minor-league rehab start before returning from the 15-day injured list and slotting back into the Detroit rotation around the middle of June.
Justin Verlander
SP
Verlander returned to the mound three days after he completed a four-inning, 66-pitch simulated game Wednesday during which he topped out at 95.3 mph with his fastball, per Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. As he works his way back from the left hip injury that has kept him on the shelf since April 4, the 43-year-old hurler has been building up his pitch count through a series of sim games thus far, but Detroit could still have him make a minor-league rehab start before bringing him back from the 60-day injured list. After completing his bullpen session, Verlander will likely be re-evaluated Sunday before the Tigers determine his next step.
Brant Hurter
RP
Hurter was lifted from his most recent relief appearance in Friday's 7-4 win over the Orioles due to what manager A.J. Hinch had referred to as a back issue, and follow-up tests evidently confirmed that the lefty reliever was contending with lumbar inflammation. Detroit recalled right-hander Ricky Vanasco from Triple-A Toledo to replace Hurter on the active roster and in the bullpen.
Casey Mize
SP
Mize was forced to depart Wednesday's outing against the Angels after four innings due to right groin tightness. It's a good sign that he was feeling well enough to play catch a day after the injury, but a determination on a possible injured list stint for Mize won't be made until his MRI results are in.
Kenley Jansen
RP
Jansen had to exit an appearance Wednesday against the Angels after his groin tightened up on him. Any sort of strain will likely lead to a stint on the injured list, but more on Jansen's status will be available soon. If Jansen is forced to miss time, the Tigers could turn to Will Vest and/or Kyle Finnegan to fill their closer role.
Bailey Horn
RP
Horn received a cortisone shot in mid-April to combat discomfort in his left elbow, which he had scoped during the offseason. The injection appears to have done its job, but Horn could be ramped up slowly in his throwing program after the Tigers pulled him off his rehab assignment earlier this season. He'll eventually head back out on another rehab assignment and may need most of the 30-day window before Detroit brings him back from the 60-day injured list.
Javier Baez
SS
After being placed on the shelf April 29, Baez had been in the midst of a running and hitting progression as the Tigers' spring training facility in Florida, but he apparently hasn't been able to get over the hump in his recovery from the injury. Once Baez gets checked out by the specialist, the Tigers should have a better idea regarding a treatment plan for the injury along with a potential timeline for the 33-year-old to start ramping up his activities. Given that he's already missed nearly a month due to the injury, Baez could be a candidate to shift to the 60-day injured list if he's not ready to begin a rehab assignment within the next couple of weeks.
Burch Smith
RP
It's unclear if Smith will require a trip to the injured list, but Brenan Hanifee will be the next man up if Smith heads to the IL. Smith allowed one run on two hits and one walk with one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning Thursday against the Guardians and figures to be unavailable for Friday's series opener against the Orioles.
Jackson Jobe
SP
Jobe continues to progress in his recovery from the Tommy John surgery he underwent last June. The 23-year-old isn't expected to be back with Detroit until late this season or the start of 2027, but he's avoided setbacks thus far as he builds up his throwing program.
Trey Sweeney
SS
The move corresponds with the Tigers claiming Grant Holman off waivers from the Dodgers. Sweeney opened the regular season on the 10-day IL due to a right shoulder strain. He was given a PRP injection Thursday, but it appears that he is not progressing enough in his recovery as anticipated. Now that he's on the 60-day IL, the earliest Sweeney can make his 2026 regular-season debut is late May.
Reese Olson
SP
It was feared that Olson would not be ready for Opening Day, but it turned out to be worse than that. Near the end of the 2025 season, there was a hope that he could return for the postseason after hitting the injured list in July, but that did not come to fruition either. Prior to the Tigers announcing Olson's surgery, they signed Framber Valdez on Feb. 4 and Justin Verlander earlier Tuesday. Troy Melton is also an option to find time in the rotation with both Olson and Jackson Jobe (elbow) out.
Parker Meadows
CF
Meadows is also recovering from a concussion. He's already been moved to the 60-day injured list, and there remains no clear timetable for his return at this point. Javier Baez has seen more action in center field since Meadows went down, and Matt Vierling and Wenceel Perez have also experienced an elevated role.
Dugan Darnell
RP
Darnell has opened camp behind the team's healthy bullpen candidates after undergoing left hip labral repair surgery in September. The 28-year-old could be ready to get back onto a mound soon, but he still looks like he'll face an uphill battle to win a spot on the Opening Day roster.
Josue Briceno
C
Briceno injured the wrist in a Grapefruit League contest last weekend and is now looking at an extended absence following surgery. The 21-year-old hit .266/.383/.500 with 20 home runs over 100 games between High-A West Michigan and Double-A Erie in 2025. Once healthy, he'll likely head back to Erie.
