Gerrit Cole

SP

Cole is nearing the final stage of his recovery from Tommy John surgery and seems to be progressing smoothly. He got into a couple Grapefruit League games, completing 2.2 innings, and is expected to kick off a minor-league rehab stint within the next few weeks. If all goes well, Cole could rejoin the Yankees' rotation by the end of May.

Carlos Rodon

SP

The mound session would be in a controlled environment like a live batting practice session. If Rodon gets through that with no issues, he could be cleared to begin a rehab assignment next week. The veteran southpaw has been working his way back from offseason elbow surgery and hit a speed bump recently when he came down with right hamstring tightness. The hamstring issue does not seem to have set him back much, as Rodon could still be ready for his season debut before the end of April.

Rafael Montero

RP

Montero has been unable to join New York to this point while he works to resolve the visa issues. The veteran reliever had been slated to use the exhibition slate to try to win a spot in the Yankees' bullpen, but given how much time he's already missed, it's becoming increasingly unlikely that Montero will have much of an opportunity to make his case this spring.

Anthony Volpe

SS

It's a significant step for Volpe, who is working his way back from surgery last October to repair the labrum in his left shoulder. Boone added that, if all goes well, Volpe should be ready to begin a rehab assignment in two weeks. That should put Volpe on pace to return around May 1, which has been the approximate timeline. Jose Caballero has been handling shortstop for the Yankees while Volpe recuperates.

Travis MacGregor

SP

MacGregor is 26 years old and has yet to appear in a major-league game, but he posted a respectable 3.82 ERA and 84:31 K:BB in 77.2 innings this past season between the Double-A and Triple-A affiliates of the Pirates. The right-hander was a second-round pick by Pittsburgh in the 2016 MLB Draft.
