Garrett Crochet

Crochet was cleared to begin a throwing program Aug. 4, and although he has yet to begin throwing off a mound, an increase in distance and intensity is still a sign of progress. The 27-year-old lefty won't have enough time to build up as a starter before the end of the season, so the Red Sox will likely use him as a reliever once he's cleared to return from the injured list.

Garrett Whitlock

RP

Whitlock was placed on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation last week but appears to be nearing a return to the mound. It sounds like Whitlock's stay on the IL could be around the minimum. The 30-year-old has posted a 2.05 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 49:7 K:BB across 44 innings out of the Boston bullpen this season.

Roman Anthony

LF

Anthony rocked a two-run home run in the fifth inning that left Delta Dental Park in Portland. Given the length of his absence, Anthony is expected to play a significant number of games while on rehab. The Red Sox could draw out the assignment until September's roster expansion, but if Anthony shows he's ready before then, it would behoove a team positioning itself for the postseason to bring him to Boston as soon as possible.

Masataka Yoshida

DH

Yoshida was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday due to the hamstring strain, with the hope he could return by early September. However, it now appears Yoshida could potentially miss the rest of the regular season. Yoshida is set to get multiple opinions and imaging done in coming days to evaluate his best course of action.

Trevor Story

SS

Story, who played the fourth game of a rehab assignment Friday, appears to be on the verge of being activated. He's scheduled to play another full game at shortstop Saturday, per MLB.com, and get a rest day Sunday. Story could be activated ahead of Monday's game against Miami.
