Garrett Crochet
SP
Crochet was cleared to begin a throwing program Aug. 4, and although he has yet to begin throwing off a mound, an increase in distance and intensity is still a sign of progress. The 27-year-old lefty won't have enough time to build up as a starter before the end of the season, so the Red Sox will likely use him as a reliever once he's cleared to return from the injured list.
Garrett Whitlock
RP
Whitlock was placed on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation last week but appears to be nearing a return to the mound. It sounds like Whitlock's stay on the IL could be around the minimum. The 30-year-old has posted a 2.05 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 49:7 K:BB across 44 innings out of the Boston bullpen this season.
Roman Anthony
LF
Anthony rocked a two-run home run in the fifth inning that left Delta Dental Park in Portland. Given the length of his absence, Anthony is expected to play a significant number of games while on rehab. The Red Sox could draw out the assignment until September's roster expansion, but if Anthony shows he's ready before then, it would behoove a team positioning itself for the postseason to bring him to Boston as soon as possible.
Masataka Yoshida
DH
Yoshida was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday due to the hamstring strain, with the hope he could return by early September. However, it now appears Yoshida could potentially miss the rest of the regular season. Yoshida is set to get multiple opinions and imaging done in coming days to evaluate his best course of action.
Tanner Houck
SP
It's a significant step in the right direction for Houck, as Tuesday was the first time he faced hitters since undergoing Tommy John Surgery in August of 2025. Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters that Houck is "in the picture" for a major-league role toward the tail end of the regular season, if the right-hander is cleared to return from the 60-day IL.
Trevor Story
SS
Story has been on the shelf since May 16 following sports hernia surgery, but he's finally nearing the finish line of what's been a lengthy recovery process. He kicked off a rehab assignment Sunday at Triple-A Worcester and went 1-for-2 at the dish while playing four innings at shortstop. Story is scheduled to play for Worcester on consecutive days Tuesday and Wednesday before rejoining the Red Sox for a re-evaluation. If the Red Sox medical staff is satisfied with Story's health, he could get the green light to return to action for the big club during their weekend series with the Giants. Once activated, Story will likely usurp Andruw Monasterio as the Red Sox's preferred option at shortstop.
Justin Slaten
RP
Slaten's placement on the IL is retroactive to Thursday, so he'll be eligible to return as soon as Aug. 28 if he's fully recovered from right elbow inflammation by then. The Red Sox recalled left-hander Raymond Burgos from Triple-A Worcester to take Slaten's spot in the bullpen.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa
2B
Kiner-Falefa was diagnosed with a stress reaction of his left forearm in late June, prompting the Red Sox to place the veteran utility man on the injured list. He was cleared to begin a hitting progression shortly after the All-Star break, and Kiner-Falefa is ready to take the next step in his recovery program by embarking on a rehab assignment. It looks like the Red Sox are set to receive significant reinforcements for the final weeks of the regular season, as both Roman Anthony (finger) and Trevor Story (sports hernia) have also been cleared to start their respective rehab assignments.
Triston Casas
1B
The Red Sox did not offer a timeline for Casas' recovery, but the procedure undoubtedly will end his season. It's another lost year for Casas, who played only 29 games in 2025 and zero in 2026 due to a ruptured patellar tendon, a left intercostal strain and now a wrist problem. Casas will be eligible for salary arbitration for a second time this offseason.
Curtis Mead
3B
Mead was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday after suffering the injury when he was hit by a pitch Monday night against the Athletics. The 25-year-old is anticipated to be sidelined for roughly 6-to-8 weeks, but Wednesday's news makes the earlier end of that time frame is more likely.
Zack Kelly
RP
The right-hander landed on the 7-day IL at Worcester in early July due to elbow inflammation, and he'll now be sidelined until at least early September. The severity of the injury isn't clear, but it's possible that Kelly has already thrown his last competitive pitch of the season.
Johan Oviedo
SP
Oviedo has been shelved since April 3 due to a right flexor strain and remains on the 60-day injured list. He's likely still several weeks away from returning to the mound for Boston should his throwing program go off without any hitches.
Kutter Crawford
SP
Crawford was expected to be in store for an abbreviated stint on the shelf to begin the season while completing his recovery from the wrist surgery he underwent last July, but he experienced forearm tightness coming out of his lone rehab start April 11 with Triple-A Worcester and has struggled to bounce back. While the fact that he's not shut down from activity entirely is promising, Crawford will still need to complete an extended throwing progression followed by a lengthy rehab assignment before he factors into the Red Sox's pitching plans. Given the multiple hurdles he still needs to clear, Crawford is unlikely to return from the 60-day injured list until August or September.
