Ketel Marte
2B
After being on the restricted list all week following his no-show for the team's series in Boston, Marte will now spend at least the next 10 days on the injured list. General manager Mike Hazen said earlier Thursday he expected Marte to rejoin the team following his trip to the IL, but it's unclear if that will be in 10 days or longer, as there's been no indication of the severity of Marte's inflammation. Ildemaro Vargas should continue to handle the bulk of the playing time at second base for Arizona while Marte is out.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
LF
Gurriel began a rehab assignment with the Aces and played eight innings in the field. The outfielder is in the midst of his third IL stint this season. He missed the start of the year while rehabbing from a torn ACL and then suffered a left hamstring injury in May before the adductor hit him in July. The Diamondbacks have a crowded outfield, and there is a question of how exactly Gurriel will fit in once he's ready.
Blake Walston
SP
Walston had been a full-time starter throughout his minor-league career and started in two of his seven appearances for the Diamondbacks in 2024 before undergoing Tommy John surgery last spring. The Diamondbacks may still be viewing the 25-year-old as a starter for the long haul, but he looks as though he'll be preparing for a multi-inning relief role for the remainder of the season once he returns from the 60-day injured list. He's been used out of the bullpen for each of his first three rehab appearances, covering four innings while striking out three and allowing one unearned run on two hits and no walks.
Ryan Thompson
RP
Arizona placed Thompson on the 15-day injured list Aug. 5, so his ability to start throwing soon after being deactivated suggests that he won't be in line for an extended stay on the shelf. Thompson had collected seven holds and four wins while pitching to a 4.43 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 40.2 innings over 46 appearances out of the Arizona bullpen prior to landing on the IL.
Zac Gallen
SP
Gallen was able to complete the throwing session without any issues, successfully taking the next step in his recovery from right elbow inflammation. The right-hander isn't eligible to be activated from the 60-day injured list Sept. 7, so the Diamondbacks may opt to have the 31-year-old toss at least one more bullpen session before organizing a minor-league rehab assignment.
Corbin Burnes
SP
Burnes has been sidelined for the entirety of the 2026 campaign while recovering from Tommy John surgery and a subsequent teres major strain that shut him down from throwing in early June. The right-hander appears to be on track for an early September return to action with the Diamondbacks. Manager Torey Lovullo was asked about a potential Sept. 1 return for Burnes on Tuesday, stating, "maybe a very short time after that."
Ryne Nelson
SP
Nelson has been on the injured list since June 19 after suffering a flexor strain and UCL sprain in his right elbow. The team reported in mid-July that the right-hander was closing in on a throwing program, and this latest update indicates that he's continuing to progress. A timetable for Nelson's return is still up in the air and will depend on how his elbow feels upon returning to the bump.
Drey Jameson
RP
Per Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com, Jameson threw 32 pitches over two innings in an unofficial game at extended spring training Saturday. Assuming Jameson bounces back well from that outing, he'll report to Reno in the coming days and will likely make at least a couple appearance before returning from the injured list. Jameson posted a 4.67 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 17.1 innings out of the Arizona bullpen before landing on the IL on July 21 due to right hip inflammation.
A.J. Puk
RP
Puk suffered a shoulder capsule sprain while pitching in a rehab game in June, and MRI results revealed in July that he still hasn't fully recovered from the injury. After seeking out a second opinion, the left-hander is now officially set to miss the entire 2026 campaign. Puk is set to become a free agent this coming offseason and will shift his focus toward getting healthy for the start of 2027.
Tommy Troy
LF
If that goes well, Troy should be cleared for a formal rehab assignment soon. The 24-year-old has been sidelined since mid-July as he battles his way back from a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder. Troy should be back with the Diamondbacks before the end of August if all goes well.
Andrew Saalfrank
RP
The throwing program began with Saalfrank tossing out to 60 feet. The left-hander underwent shoulder surgery ahead of spring training and is considered out for the season.
Cristian Mena
RP
Mena sustained a teres major strain in his right shoulder in June of 2025, which caused him to miss the rest of that season. He opened 2026 on the 60-day IL and was cleared to resume his throwing program in mid-May. However, it appears Mena suffered another setback in his recovery, and his shoulder injury is severe enough for him to undergo a season-ending procedure. The hope for the Diamondbacks is that the surgery will have the 23-year-old fully healthy for the start of spring training in February.
