Matt Waldron
SP
Waldron breezed through his 2.1 frames on 27 pitches, yielding just one hit. It was Waldron's first outing in exactly one month, as he's working his way back from a right brachialis muscle injury. If the knuckleballer is added back to the major-league roster at the conclusion of his rehab assignment, he is expected to be used in a relief role.
Freddy Fermin
C
Fermin won't be available for at least the Padres' next six games after he was diagnosed with a concussion following his early exit in the team's 9-3 win Saturday, when he was hit in the mask by a pitch prior to the sixth inning. San Diego called up Blake Hunt from Triple-A El Paso to provide another healthy body behind the plate behind Rodolfo Duran, who will handle catching duties in Sunday's series finale in Baltimore.
Nick Pivetta
SP
Pivetta has been on the shelf due to a right flexor strain since mid-April. He resumed a throwing program by playing catch May 29 and has since ramped up his throwing distance and intensity, though he's yet to get back on a mound. Pivetta still has several obstacles to clear and isn't likely to return to the Padres' rotation until sometime after the All-Star break.
Luis Campusano
C
Campusano has now been out over a month after fracturing a toe on his left foot in early May. The backstop has been catching pitches and swinging pain-free since late May, but San Diego hasn't yet sent him out on a rehab assignment. Fellow backstop Freddy Fermin exited Saturday's contest against Baltimore after being hit by a warmup pitch near the back of the head, so the only healthy catcher on San Diego's 26-man roster at the moment is Rodolfo Duran.
Joe Musgrove
SP
After making one appearance during spring training in early March, Musgrove experienced inflammation in his surgically repaired right elbow. He continued to play catch but was then shut down from even that amount of throwing. Musgrove has since been cleared to resume light throwing, but he doesn't appear to be anywhere near game action. He isn't expected to be ready to join the Padres until after the All-Star break.
German Marquez
SP
Sunday marked Marquez's second rehab appearance after landing on the injured list May 3 due to right forearm nerve irritation. The veteran righty has tossed 6.1 scoreless frames and has allowed just two hits while posting a 5:1 K:BB across the pair of minor-league outings. Marquez progressed to throwing 47 pitches Sunday after tossing 36 in his initial appearance with El Paso, and he promisingly sat at 95.4 mph with his fastball Sunday, per Clark Fahrenthold of MadFriars, after averaging 94.2 mph on the pitch before getting hurt. Marquez seems likely to need another rehab outing or two, but he could be back with San Diego by the end of June.
Jake Cronenworth
2B
Cronenworth was hit on the chin by a fastball during a game April 18. He played out the rest of that contest, but after later experiencing concussion symptoms, he landed on the 7-day IL. While Cronenworth has been able to resume taking light swings and watched a game from the dugout Saturday for the first time since being placed on the injured list, the Padres seem intent on having him take his recovery slowly. He'll likely need a minor-league rehab assignment before he's ready to return, and at this point, it appears he won't be activated until at least early July.
Ramon Laureano
LF
Manager Craig Stammen said that Laureano's surgery is expected to keep him out for 4-to-5 months, making it extremely unlikely that he plays again this season. If the 31-year-old isn't able to make it back before the end of the year, he'll finish 2026 with a .203/.286/.374 slash line alongside seven homers, 21 RBI, 23 runs and seven steals over 53 games. Gavin Sheets will likely take over as San Diego's primary left fielder for the rest of the regular season, which will allow Ty France to start regularly at first base.
Jeremiah Estrada
RP
Estrada entered the ballgame in the bottom of the sixth with the score tied at 2-2. The 27-year-old allowed Bryce Harper to cross home plate as the go-ahead run as a result of an Alec Bohm double play, limiting the damage at just one. Estrada has given up two earned runs in his last two appearances after previously pitching 4.2 scoreless innings. The right-hander now commands a 3.48 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 23:10 K:BB through 20.2 innings this season.
Yu Darvish
SP
Though the Padres are currently stashing Darvish on the restricted list rather than the injured list, the 39-year-old righty is slated to miss the entire 2026 season after undergoing an internal brace procedure on his pitching arm in Oct. 29. Just over six months into what will likely be a 12-to-15-month recovery process, Darvish seems to be progressing as expected, and he'll likely advance to throwing off a mound and potentially facing hitters before the end of the season. Darvish still has two years remaining on his contract after this season, but retirement could be a possibility if he doesn't feel he can compete at a high level once he completes his recovery from surgery.
Bryan Hoeing
RP
The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Lucas Giolito, who signed a one-year deal with San Diego. Hoeing will miss the entire 2026 season after having surgery in March to repair his flexor tendon.
